Residential interior design Sydney

At AZAR Studio, our residential projects are always much more than working with an interior. They are about a person’s way of life, personal story, inner rhythm, habits, emotions and state of mind.

Unlike commercial projects, where space often serves a brand, business or customer flow, residential design requires the architect to become not only the author of the space, but also an attentive listener, psychologist and guide. We aim to understand what gives a person a sense of comfort, inspiration, calm and enjoyment of life — and translate that into architectural language.

We design spaces that are not only visually beautiful, but also emotionally precise.

A space that feels natural to live In

We pay particular attention to movement and circulation within the interior. We avoid awkward layouts, long meaningless corridors and dead zones.

It is important to us that a space, whatever its function or content, feels natural, fluid and soft. A person should not have to fight the interior, but live within it freely and intuitively.
We work with timeless principles passed down by previous generations of architects.

A key part of our approach is the relationship between positive and negative space.

Negative space is the transitional space where life moves through the interior. Narrow and elongated areas suggest movement: a person passes through them, but does not stay there for long.

In these areas, it is important to work with perspective, light and the direction of view. Sometimes they can be deliberately lowered or made more restrained, so that the transition into a positive space makes the latter feel larger, freer and more significant.

Positive spaces are places where a person stays: to rest, connect, communicate and feel protected. These spaces often tend towards a square, a circle or more balanced proportions. They are places where people want to remain.

Architectural minimalism

We create spaces that are architectural, refined and minimal. But for us, minimalism never means emptiness.

Minimalism requires particularly precise work with details: with what a person sees every day, touches with their hand, and experiences as part of daily rituals.

Artworks, door handles, power outlets, switches, wall textures, textiles and material junctions all contribute to the personal feeling of home.

Tactility and Detail

We choose tactile and visual details together with the client.

It is important to us that a person can feel the material, the weight of a handle, the texture of a surface, the temperature of metal and the softness of fabric. Everything they interact with every day should not be random, but personally selected.

One of our favourite details is the UOVO handle by Olivari: an object of simple form, but with a very precise bodily sensation.

What often remains unnoticed at first glance is, for us, the foundation of quality: fine architectural junctions, refined transitions between materials, frameless doors, concealed skirting, carefully resolved geometry, clean lines and the absence of visual noise.

These are the decisions that make an interior feel truly expensive — not decoratively, but architecturally.

Lighting Design

A separate part of our philosophy is working with light.

We are deeply engaged in lighting design and see lighting as one of the main emotional tools of an interior.
Warm and cool light should not compete with each other. They should interact.

We often place warm light below eye level, making it reflected, soft and almost tactile.
Cooler light, by contrast, can work like daylight: coming from above, as if a natural stream of sunlight were passing through architectural slots and openings.

It is the combination of these temperatures that creates a sense of depth, cinematic atmosphere and that almost imperceptible magic of space.

Barefoot Luxury

We are inspired by the aesthetic of Barefoot Luxury — a combination of simplicity and refined sophistication.

We are interested in contrasts of materials and sensations: black Shou Sugi Ban timber next to polished bright blue Indian granite or satin chrome; the warm texture of honed sandstone next to stainless steel; simple linen fabric with silk inserts; minimal architecture with delicate crystal accents.

For us, luxury is not about display. It is about nuance, tactility and depth of detail.

Australian Way of Life

We also understand the specifics of Australian living: what is genuinely important in a home, and what is unnecessary.
Climate, light, lifestyle, the connection between the home and outdoor areas, privacy, storage, durability of materials and ease of maintenance all influence our design decisions.

We help clients invest not in random decorative gestures, but in what improves quality of life and the long-term value of the property.
